L’historiador Josep Casamartina descobreix que molts elements decoratius del Palau Güell no són de Gaudí, sinó que són reaprofitats d’una casa anterior. Ho explica al seu nou llibre «Un palau dins d’un altre. De Portaferrissa a Nou de la Rambla«, editat per la Diputació de Barcelona.

 

Algunes llars de foc, rajoles, portes i columnes del Palau Güell no serien, segons Casamartina, obra de l’artista reusenc. Es tractaria, de fet, d’obres de Camil Oliveras, arquitecte de capçelera dels Güell abans de Gaudí. Aquests elements formaven part del Palau Fonollar, situat a tocar del Palau Moja, edifici que era la residència de la familia abans de construir el Palau de Nou de la Rambla.

 

El comte desnonat

 

La història de com aquestes decoracions van acabar al Palau Güell es remonta a una disputa legal entre Eusebi Güell i la família Rosés i Masriera, llogaters del Palau Fonollar. El comte de Güell volia comprar l’edifici, però va trobar l’oposició dels inquilins, que volien exercis el seu dret de retracte per adquirir l’immoble. El litigi va durar una dècada, temps durant el qual Güell va remodelar l’edifici i incloure les obres d’Oliveras. La sentència final, però, va ser negativa pel comte que, obligat a sortir ràpidament de l’edifici, va decidir arrencar tots els elements que hi havia col·locat.

 

Desnonat, Eusebi Güell va decidir fer-se construïr el luxòs palau que avui porta el seu nom i li encarregà els dissenys a Gaudí. Aquest va saber reaprofitar l’herència del Palau Fonollar i va integrar tots els elements a la nova residència. De fet, ho va fer de fet amb tan encert que, fins ara, mai s’havia dubtat que tot el que hi ha al Palau Güell fos de l’artista. “Quina necessitat tenia Güell de posar una decoració passada de moda en un edifici que li estava costant molts diners? Gaudí va fer un collage tan genial que ha hagut de passar més d’un segle perquè es destapés”, diu Casamartina

 

Unes conclusions arriscades

 

La investigació de Casamartina aporta unes dades que, com a poc, resulten agosarades. Provenen, però, d’un profund estudi iniciat quan l’historiador va rebre l’encàrrec d’elaborar el  pla museològic del Palau Güell. «En una primera passejada vaig adonar-me que part de la decoració no semblava de Gaudí malgrat el bon encaix en la decoració general», explica Casamartina.

 

A aquesta primera impressió li seguiren l’estudi de reportatges periodístics de l’època, documents de l’Arxiu Güell situat a l’Arxiu Nacional de Catalunya i de l’Arxiu Oliveras, que es troba al COAC de Girona. Casamartina també va rebre confirmacions de la seva hipòtesi per part de l’Associació de l’Estudi del Moble, que va analitzar algunes de les xemeneies de l’immoble. Entre les fonts, destaca una guia del Palau Güell escrita per Josep Puiggarí l’any 1894, que ja llavors esmentava que les llars de foc del menjador i de la sala de confiança eren de Camil Oliveras.
