L’Abadia de Montserrat, amic institucional de la nostra associació, acull el divendres dia 2 i el dissabte dia 3 de juny les Jornades d’Estudi ‘Caravaggio a Montserrat’. L’acte s’organitza a pocs mesos que el «Sant Jeroni Penitent», l’única obra de l’artista italià que es conserva a Catalunya, viatgi a Milà per la mostra més gran celebrada mai del pintor renaixentista. Les jornades coincideixen també amb els 100 anys que l’obra va arribar a Montserrat de la mà del Pare Bonaventura Ubach, que l’havia adquirit en una subhasta a Roma sense saber-ne l’autoria.

 

L’obra va arribar al monestir benedictí el 22 d’abril de 1917. En un principi l’obra es va atribuir a José de Ribera, i no va ser fins l’any 1943 quan un dels més importants caravaggistes, Roberto Longhi, va publicar un article amb el dibuix del quadre de ‘Sant Jeroni penitent’, que ell mateix havia fet al seu bloc de notes el 1914 al Palazzo Magni, abans de la subhasta en què el Pare Ubach el va comprar. Arran d’aquesta descoberta, el 1951 s’exposa l’obra per primer cop a Milà com un Caravaggio.

 

Desvelant els secrets del Caravaggio de Montserrat

 

Entre els ponents de les jornades ha participat Rossella Vodret, que ha presentat algunes de les conclusions de la seva investigació sobre el Sant Jeroni penitent de Montserrat. Vodret ha esxplicat que, a diferència del que es va pensar en un principi, el quadre no conserva la tela original, sinó que va ser reentelat. Montserrat vol reivindicar amb aquest simposi la importància d’aquesta obra de Caravaggio, que està entre les quatre úniques pintures de l’artista que hi ha a l’estat espanyol.

 

Rossella Vodret ha detallat que ha descobert qüestions interessants com ara que hi ha «algunes incisions a la pintura que l’acosten a altres obres del mateix període, com Sant Jeroni Borghese, i també reflecteix les característiques de la manera de treballar de Caravaggio, que va treballant directament sobre la tela». També ha ressaltat altres aspectes que es plasmen en l’obra com «una pinzellada ràpida i molt impressionista».

 

En l’estudi liderat per Vodret també es desprèn que l’obra Sant Jeroni penitent es va preparar sobre una tela més rosada i terrosa, a diferència de les preparacions més fosques que habitualment feia Caravaggio. Tot i que és una tècnica singular, no és inèdita, ja que també l’havia utilitzat per altres quadres com El sacrifici d’Isaac.
