Una nueva metodología desarrollada por investigadores de la Universitat Rovira i Virgili ha permitido determinar que el arco de acceso al Palau Güell, de Antoni Gaudí, forma una curva de tipo Rankine y no una catenaria o una parábola, como se aseguraba hasta ahora.

 

Los científicos de la URV han llegado a esta conclusión después de diseñar un método objetivo que permite conocer la tipología de cualquier arco. Los investigadores Blas Herrera, Albert Samper, y Genaro González, decidieron utilizar el arco de Gaudí como ejemplo para el estudio porque se trata de uno de los arcos más relevantes del patrimonio internacional y cuyas características se han debatido mucho.

Una nueva metodología

 

Conocer la tipología cónica o coseno hiperbólica de un arco de cualquier edificio del patrimonio arquitectónico no siempre es sencillo, ya que el paso del tiempo puede provocar deformaciones mecánicas que dificulten su descripción. En ocasiones, la disposición geométrica y constructiva está registrada en los tratados o borradores que han sobrevivido a lo largo de la historia y permiten conocer el proceso de construcción utilizado por el arquitecto a la hora de diseñar el arco. Pero cuando estos aspectos no están documentados y no se hace un estudio matemático riguroso, se produce un debate subjetivo e intuitivo que suele provocar discrepancias o conclusiones diversas.

 

Para evitar estas situaciones y aportar rigor a la determinación de la tipología de los arcos, el grupo de investigación Applied Geometry, del Departamento de Ingeniería Informática y Matemáticas (DEIM) de la URV, ha elaborado una metodología geométrica que permite determinar cuál es la tipología de curva -cónica o coseno hiperbólica- que mejor se ajusta en un arco del patrimonio arquitectónico. Los investigadores Blas Herrera, del DEIM; Albert Samper, de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura, y Genaro González, del Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica de la URV, utilizaron el arco de acceso al Palau Güell del arquitecto Antoni Gaudí como ejemplo de aplicación del estudio, porque se trata de uno de los arcos más relevantes del patrimonio internacional cuya tipología ha dado lugar a diferentes hipótesis.

Los investigadores recurrieron a técnicas de escaneo de puntos, modelos tridimensionales, procedimientos de geometría analítica, métodos numéricos y computación informática y estadística para crear un protocolo de determinación matemática aplicada a encontrar ecuaciones analíticas de arcos arquitectónicos. Este sistema, aplicado en el arco de acceso al Palau Güell, ha puesto de manifiesto que la curva que más se ajusta a este arco -con un 99,72% – es una de tipo Rankine y se ha encontrado, incluso, la ecuación analítica. Este resultado contradice lo que muchos críticos de la arquitectura habían afirmado durante décadas: que este arco se trataba de una catenaria o incluso de una parábola.

 

Para desmentir las hipótesis anteriores, los investigadores de la URV han aportado un ranking que muestra de manera descendente cuáles son los arcos que más y menos se ajustan, lo que hace descartar las conclusiones que se habían mantenido vigentes hasta ahora.

 

Esta nueva metodología se puede aplicar a cualquier arco del mundo de la arquitectura, con deformaciones mecánicas o sin ellas, y no deja lugar a dudas, ambigüedades y contradicciones que hasta ahora había en la crítica geométrica sobre el tema.
